The Urdd Centre in Llangrannog is a not for profit, outdoor centre which aims to give young people relevant and memorable experiences. The project, known as the Heart of the Centre, includes a new build kitchen and dining block, new build 72 bed sleeping accommodation and refurbishment of the administration block. HLN are the architects for RIBA stage 3 to 5 of the project which completed construction in March 2023.The new buildings replace buildings constructed in the 1970’s, which perform poorly in terms of energy efficiency and struggle to satisfy current day catering demands.The buildings have been designed to be environmentally sustainable in terms of operational and embodied carbon. The building aims to achieve reductions in energy demand through the use of highly insulated building fabric design and excellent air tightness. The new buildings are timber frame construction and timber is used extensively for the buildings for it’s environmental benefits as a low carbon material and it’s benefits for wellbeing for the users. Where possible, materials used for construction are being sourced locally from responsible sustainable sources including the timber from Welsh forests. The camp currently uses a mix of electricity and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for its fuel energy sources. The long-term energy strategy is to move to all electric and adopt low and zero carbon technologies and renewables where appropriate. Following technical and cost benefit appraisals of renewable energy options it was agreed that all three buildings, will use air source heat pumps (ASHP) for the heating and hot water generation. The heat pumps will be supplemented by photovoltaic panels. Radiators will be used in Enlli and the Sleeping Block while underfloor heating will be used in the dining hall to maximise the efficiencies of the heat pumps. The buildings will be naturally ventilated to the greatest possible extent. Enlli will have opening windows as appropriate of general office use. The Sleeping Block will make use of the double height spaces with opening roof vents and low-level opening vents to provide both background and summer time purge ventilation. The dining hall will use roof ventilation terminals for natural ventilation while the kitchen will be fully mechanically ventilated.
